The Sri Pada is a pilgrimage site which has been held sacred by the devotees of four religions namely Buddhists, Hindus , Christains and Islamists. Historians agreee that this site, even prior to the introduction of Buddhism to the Island had been a sacred site whwre the primitive people worshipped the Sun god.
Sri Pada is first mentioned ( as Samanthakuta ) in the Deepawamsa, the earliest pali chronicle , and also in the 5th century chronicle Mahawasama , where it is stated that the Buddha visited the mountain peak.
The mountain is located in the Southern reaches of the Central Highlands in the Rathnapura District and Nuwara Eliya district of the Sabaragamuwa Province and Central Province ----lying about 40km northeast of the city of Rathnapura and 32 km Southwest of the city of Hatton
.
Adam's Peak or the Sri Pada is an important pilgrim site. Buddhist believe the impression on the summit is the footprint of loard Buddha himself. Though it takes around 5 hours to reach the peak by foot, devotees of many religions climb the mountain daily to invoke blessings.
Buddhists regards the footprint as Buddha's hence its name Sri Pada, " holy footprint ". The Hindus believe that while dancing to create the world, te god Shiva left his footprint , thus for them, the mountain is Shivanolipatha Malai ( Loard Shiva's footprint on the mountain ).
Joim the 20,00 pilgrims who climb 5,500 stairs to the summit of SriPada , or Adam's Peak , the most sacred mountain in Sri Lanak.
