 The Traditional Foods of Sri Lanka...๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Sri Lanka has many traditional foods. They have become a part of our cuisine due to the influence of many factors. For example the a Dutch , who ruled a part of this country for a long period , brough their food here, and soon they became popular food of the low country coastal areas.




The south Indian influence on our cuisine can not be forgotten too. South India had many cultural ties with our country and their dishes such as Dosai and Wade have become popular food of the locals. Most of our traditional foods are influenced by our main food crops rice and the spices. Rice and curry has been the staple diet of the localds for cecenturies. The curry is heavily spiced, spices enriching its tastes as well as durability. Spiced food last longer without  rrefrigeration  and this is why spices had a heavy demand for many centuries before the modern eleelectronic ststoring systems were invented.



Koththu is a popular traditional food which is made of shredded roti bread, wich is mixed with vegetables, eggs, fish and meat. It is often eaten for dinner and is in great demand by the locals. Hoppers are too. They can be made using wheat or rice flour, which is usually fermented with east, after mixing it with coconut water and water. Hoppers could be either savory or sweet.



String hoppers are made from a hot  water dough of rice meal or wheat flour. A string hopper mold is used for making of the string hoppers, and thereafter they are steamed. Lump rice is a tasty variety of rice which was introduced by the Dutch to Sri Lnaka. Pittu is made with rice flour and grated coconut and its shape is cycylindrical. It is often eaten with "lunu miris " which is chili salt and lime crushed together.



Most of the traditional local sweet meats come out during the Sinhala New Year  time. They are usually served  with milkrice to the new year table adding beauty as well as taste to the meal.


 Keum ,Kokis, Athirasa ,Aluwa, Aggala,Munkeum, Assmi are some of the sweetmeats that are very popular with the local. They are made of rice , flour and sugar and the mixture is often worked into dough by adding water, coconut milk before cooking them in deep oil, to harded and preserve them for some time.
